Thames & Hudson (also Thames and Hudson and sometimes T&H for brevity) are a publisher, especially of art and illustrated books, founded in 1949 by Walter and Eva Neurath. The name was chosen after the River Thames (London) and the Hudson River (New York), spanning both sides of the Atlantic. It remains an independent family-run publisher.
The publisher is based in London with sister companies in New York (Thames & Hudson USA) and Paris. Areas covered include archaeology, architecture, art, decorative arts, design, history, photography, religion and spirituality. Some books for children are also published.
Thames & Hudson\'s World of Art series is especially well-known. In particular, A Concise History of Painting: From Giotto to Cézanne by Michael Levey (of the National Gallery in London), originally published in 1962 (ISBN 0-500-20024-6), is a classic and authoritative introduction to the history of European art from the beginnings of perspective in Italy to the foundations of modern art at the start of the 20th century.
