A parakeet (budgie) is a term for any one of a large number of unrelated small to medium sized parrot species, that generally have long-tail feathers. The term is descriptive, but does not imply an actual relationship between the different parakeets. They have beautiful exotic colors and may not survive on it\'s own. If kept as a pet they depend on human contact and cages for safety, alone out in the world they have a greater risk of being prey.
The Common Pet Parakeet\'s proper name is: Budgerigar and comes from Australia. Others can come from the Americas, Asia etc.
In aviculture the more precise term conure is used for small to medium sized parrot species with long tails of the genera Aratinga, and a few other genera of the tribe Arini, which are mainly endemic to South America. An older orthography still sometimes encountered is paroquet.
